Deliverance from Bondage—a lesson in all the Feasts

The Feast of Trumpets Then we find that the most profound evidence the Bible gives us about The Feast of Trumpets is also a memorial of deliverance. Here we see it in Psalm 81, a Psalm of deliverance, where the Bible includes this feast as the same sign that God is the One who has delivered us: Psalm — Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day.

Where is the right balance? One more — If we adopted the current youth curriculum, and if we continued to have four or five Gospel Doctrine classes in our ward, the four or five classes would be completely different from each other.

Rather than all classes discussing the same points, we might have one teacher who thought it was most important to focus on how the children of Israel coped with adversity in their Egyptian captivity; another teacher might guide you to discover parallels between Moses and Christ; a third might think it was most important to learn how to distinguish between the genuine priesthood and counterfeit powers, like those the priests of Pharaoh used to imitate the miracles performed by Moses and Aaron.

Thanks for your input. This kind of discussion can help guide how I prepare lessons in the future, even before there are any announced changes to the curriculum. That is about to change. Imagine for a moment if such a curse should be placed today. How many of you — by show of hands — are the firstborn of your mothers, who would have been slain? Now think to yourselves, by name, who in your family would have died? Which daughter? What would your life be like next week, without them, and losing them all at once?

Timeless Principles

What would that mean to you economically and your ability to feed your family — what was left of it — that year? I am moved by the final clause of verse 6 — this disaster would cause such grief and mourning throughout Egypt that never, at any time, would their be such a great outpouring of grief again. This great loss of life, according to the wording of the curse Moses pronounced, should also have come upon the children of Israel — their firstborn, in many cases the sons holding the birthright — would also have been slain by the destroying angel in the general plague.

God did not exempt them from the potential disaster. But the Lord did open a way for the children of Israel to escape that tragedy if — and only if — they were obedient and followed strictly to the letter the instructions he gave to Moses, set out in Exodus, chapter First, they were to make a very particular sacrifice, with very specific rules for using the animal afterward.

Did the Lord really not know which houses held Israelite families? That is, did he really need to have the houses marked so he would know which ones to smite and which ones to spare? Then what were the purposes of the Passover ritual?
